For Maria Jesus's mother, advocating for her daughter has always been part of daily life.
Over the years, she has navigated doctor's appointments, therapies, specialized equipment, and countless challenges to ensure Maria Jesus has every opportunity to live a fulfilling life. Like many families supporting a loved one with disabilities, she understands that some of the most important needs often come with a price tag that insurance doesn't fully cover.
One of those needs was a set of specialized hearing aids.
Several years ago, Maria Jesus found herself in need of a new set of hearing aids specifically designed to meet her unique needs. The device was essential to helping her communicate, connect with others, and remain engaged in the world around her. But for her family, the cost was overwhelming.
Then came the news that changed everything.
"When VALLEYLIFE told me they would pay for the hearing aids, I couldn't ask for anything better," her mother recalled.
That gift did more than provide hearing aids. It provided peace of mind. It removed a financial burden from a family already balancing numerous responsibilities. Most importantly, it gave Maria Jesus access to a tool that helped her continue to communicate and participate more fully in everyday life.
Stories like Maria Jesus's are the “why” behind the support VALLEYLIFE receives. The contributions generated through $20 for 26 can help fund similar needs for Members in the future. Whether it's medical equipment, transportation expenses, or other unfunded necessities, monthly donations help ensure VALLEYLIFE can continue stepping in when Members need help the most.
For Maria Jesus, the hearing aids opened doors to greater connection and independence. For another Member, it could be a wheelchair, a communication device, adaptive equipment, or another resource that improves their quality of life.
Today, more than 14 years after joining VALLEYLIFE, Maria Jesus continues to thrive within Day Treatment Area (DTA) 6. Known for her determination and strong sense of self, she often surprises those around her with her wit and ability to advocate for herself. Her mother says she has always found ways to prove that a disability does not define a person's intelligence, capabilities, or potential.
But behind every success story is a network of support.
For Maria Jesus, that support came from a mother who never stopped advocating for her, a VALLEYLIFE community that believed in her future, and donors who made sure a critical need didn't go unmet.
The hearing aids she received are a reminder that sometimes one act of generosity can have a lasting impact. Through the $20 for 26 Campaign, today's donors can help create those same opportunities for other Members and families facing challenges of their own.
Because at the end of the day, you can help make a difference.
